Prison Tour

Kids need a little perspective? Many jails will give kids a tour similar to Scared Straight on A&E. Check out the community outreach page of your local jail.

Go To A Costume Rental Store

Take the dress up trunk to new heights and go to a legit costume rental store. It’s about the experience of trying stuff on and laughing – and both are free! Goodwill and Party City are also options, but they’re more for buying and less for just having fun. If you do end up walking out with something, make it more impactful by wearing it out on the town to some local tourist traps. It will be something they never forget.

Roll Down A Hill

Let the Laughter Roll: Why Letting Kids Roll Down Hills is More Than Just Fun

Sunshine, laughter, and the thrill of the wind in their hair – there’s something undeniably magical about watching kids roll down a hill. But beyond the giggles and pure joy, this simple act is packed with developmental benefits that make it a valuable experience for growing minds and bodies.

Building Gross Motor Skills:

Rolling down a hill requires coordination, balance, and core strength. As kids navigate the bumps and dips, they’re strengthening their muscles, improving their spatial awareness, and honing their ability to control their movements. It’s a natural playground workout that gets them moving and having fun at the same time.

Boosting Sensory Development:

The sensation of rolling, the rush of wind, the changing perspective – it’s a sensory smorgasbord for little ones. This exposure to different sensory experiences helps to develop their nervous system and refine their ability to process information from the world around them.

Enhancing Emotional Well-being:

The laughter and pure joy of rolling down a hill are a natural mood booster. Physical activity releases endorphins, those feel-good chemicals that combat stress and promote feelings of happiness and well-being. Plus, the sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering the hill can boost confidence and self-esteem.

Sparkling Creativity and Imagination:

Let’s not forget the pure fun factor! Rolling down a hill is an open-ended invitation to play and explore. Kids can turn it into a race, imagine they’re flying through the air, or invent their own silly stories about their rolling adventures. It’s a chance to unleash their creativity and let their imaginations soar.

Creating Lasting Memories:

These moments of carefree play become cherished memories that kids will carry with them long after the last roll down the hill. They’ll remember the laughter, the sunshine, and the feeling of pure joy – all tied to the simple act of being a kid and embracing the fun of the outdoors.

So, the next time you see a grassy hill, don’t just walk on by. Grab your kids, throw yourselves down, and let the laughter roll! You might just be surprised at how much fun (and benefit) you can all have.

Meteor Shower

They happen more often than you think. And it’s so much more than just the magic of seeing a shooting star.

  • An opportunity for meaningful conversations: If there is a difficult conversation you’ve been meaning to have, there is no better opportunity. There’s no running off, and the activity of watching the stars distracts from the awkwardness just enough, while also being calming and helps them be more receptive to your words.
  • Calming as kids focus and concentrate on seeing one fly by.
  • Competitive kids will love counting how many they see.
  • Curiosity and imagination will be tapped as you inspire your future scientist, engineer, writer, or politician (yes politician – our world is but a speck in the universe, and no matter where you are, we’re all bearing witness to the same fireballs in the sky. We are connected and we need to learn to share our planet’s resources).
  • Get a different perspective. Get out in nature where life slows down and priorities change.

Make a camp fire and bring some sleeping bags, even if you’ll be sleeping inside.

Arm Wrestle

A few minutes to strengthen father-child bond. Let ’em win or show them what super daddy strength looks like. Tap your best acting skills and have fun, feed their imagination, and build their confidence.

Movie Date Night

Each kid needs to feel special in their father’s eye. Girl or boy, you must be intentional about spending solo time with each child. And don’t neglect date nights with your wife either! Put it on the calendar. It will make a difference in your child’s self-esteem, the strength of your marriage, and your family’s happiness.

Music Man

Jam through your vinyl’s or Spotify playlists. See what resonates. Find shared interests. My 2 year old loves Rammstein, Prince, and Garth Brooks… Broaden their horizons before you get stuck listening to “Baby Shark” on endless loop.

Dance or Fight Choreography

Pick a track like MJ’s Thriller and learn all the moves so you and your kids can spontaneously bust a move the next time you hear it.

Or… binge some Jackie Chan and then film your own epic fight scene!

Make Friendship Bracelets

Don’t discount it. Bracelet making can give a restless or agitated mind a much needed break through creative expression. And the joy your child will discover from gifting a handmade bracelet to a friend or loved one will reinforce a sense of empathy and kindness that our kids so desperately need. And if none of that resonates, then yeah, pretty and shiny things can be nice on their own.

Great for travel.

Great for supporting calmness, focus, creativity, kindness, patience, self-reliance, strategic thinking, and self-esteem.

Water Balls

Faster fill than the silicone ones, but not as much splash
