DAD TALK:

  • Fear and anxiety are natural and important. They prompt us to pause and consider the situation; to take time to think. When you feel anxious or afraid, look at the facts: This is a business, and if they let people get hurt, they would go out of business. You only float a few feet over a soft net. You’re wearing safety gear. An instructor is with you, and I am watching you too.
  • Conquering Fear: When you take control of your emotions, when you say “Yes, I feel scared, but fear is not in charge. Fear is only one factor in my decision. I choose joy and I am resolute in reaching that goal.”, when you consider other perspectives and possibilities, when you do those things you demonstrate wisdom and resolve – characteristics that will help you succeed in all things.
  • Pride: “I am proud of you!” Say it often and with fervor. Vocalize it. And let them know that they should be proud of themselves for conquering their fear; for trying; for demonstrating informed courage.
  • Empathy: “Do you think other kids are nervous? What would you say to them?”
  • Curiosity and Science: Was it hard to stay in the middle of the tunnel? Why? What made you move towards the wall? What was the instructor doing and why? What made you go higher? Why? Why? Why? What if you had a parachute on? On the car ride to or from the event, roll down the windows and have the kids hold their hand out at different angles to the wind. How do you think airplanes turn? How do spaceships turn?
