Love Languages: You may be killing their self-confidence.
Men often show love through actions rather than words. But if that doesn’t match your child’s love language, you could be crushing their self-confidence and self-respect.
What is a love language?
There are 5:
- Words of Affirmation (“I love you and I’m proud of you”, “You have what it takes to be a man” (for boys), or “You are amazing and beautiful in ever way imaginable” (for girls))
- Quality Time (individualized attention)
- Physical Touch (hugs & snuggles)
- Gifts (often as simple as a a surprise piece of candy – anything to show that you were thinking of them)
- Acts of Service (including teaching new skills)
It’s all about the way they prefer to receive love – the way they feel loved and appreciated.
How to identify your child’s love language
- Pay attention to how your child expresses love to you. Do they like to hug and kiss you? Do they tell you how much they love you? Do they like to spend time with you? Do they give you little gifts? Do they like to help you out around the house?
- Think about what makes them happy. What makes them mad or when do they seem to be feeling slighted?
- Ask them. That alone demonstrates your love for them and your appreciation for who they are.
Why is it important to know your child’s love language?
It will help you to positively impact their:
- Self-esteem
- Behavior
- Academic performance
- Return love & respect
Show them you care by communicating through their love language!
