Men’s Groups

Why dads should join a Men’s Group:

Being a dad is the best job in the world, but it’s also the hardest. You’re constantly on the go, trying to keep your kids happy, healthy, and out of trouble. And let’s not forget about the wife, who deserves a medal for putting up with us.

We can often feel stressed, overwhelmed, and alone. Best thing I ever did for my mental health (and consequently for the sanity of my family) was to join a men’s group.

Like a fireteam or a band of brothers, we support each other through thick and thin, and we meet regularly to discuss our lives, challenges, and goals. It’s like guard rails for your life trajectory. Who do you want to be for your family, what values matter, are you delivering or do you need a kick in the ass…?

Finding a men’s group:

• Ask your friends, family, faith group, or colleagues. The objective is to look local, but if you would prefer, check out https://mensgroup.com for online options. You want a group you can meet with in-person.
• Visit potential groups to see if it’s a good fit for you. It’s important to find a group where you feel comfortable sharing and where you feel like you can be yourself.
• Look for men you want to emulate. Who has their shit together? Who has a happy marriage? Who shares your values?

Don’t stop there. Find  a mentor, and a mentee:

It’s important that you also look both up (older) and down (younger) the age spectrum, perhaps not for or within your men’s group, but for outside council.  We can learn from the perspectives of those with more wisdom, and your self worth and drive will be invigorated by imparting your wisdom on those younger than you. We are hardwired for this, and you find yourself becoming a better man by engaging more with others.
